Retail container shipments set to increase in 2012
Friday, February 17, 2012 - 10:00am

A recent Global Port Tracker report, as reported by Chain Store Age, indicates retailers will increase their shipping of large containers through the world's ports in 2012. The numbers, though slightly down from 2011 levels for February, are expected to show growth through the following four months. The estimated year-over-year shipping volume change is a rise of 0.7 percent versus the first half of 2011.

"With consumer confidence building, retailers are optimistic that the economy is recovering but are continuing to be cautious with their inventory levels," the National Retail Federation's supply chain vice president Jonathan Gold told the source.

Whether keeping a close watch on reduced inventory or gearing up for increased shipments, business owners can benefit from a strong warehouse management system (WMS.) Knowing the exact location of every piece of every shipment can mean time and money savings for retailers finding their way out of the recent recession.

The U.S. Census Bureau's recent consumer survey holds good news for retail traffic, indicating increased shopper confidence and demand that could help fuel the aforementioned rise in shipping. Sales rose 0.4 percent compared to December when adjusted seasonally and were 5.8 percent higher than January 2011.
